In-form Yaw Yeboah Swaps Polish Top-flight for MLS Adventure

The Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer has signed Ghanaian forward Yaw Yeboah from Polish top-tier club Wisla Krakow.

The winger will be with the Black & Gold until the 2024 season, with an option for another year. Yeboah will be added to Columbus’ roster as an international player and will not be formally added until he receives his international transfer certificate and P-1 Visa.

The Crew used Targeted Allocation Money to bring his pay under team restrictions in order to comply with Major League Soccer standards.

“Yaw is a young winger whose explosive style of play has made him one of the most exciting up-and-coming players in the Ekstraklasa during his time in Poland,” said Time Bezbachenko, president and general manager of the Crew.

“Yaw offers excellent international experience with the Ghanaian National Team in addition to playing in some of Europe’s best leagues.”

After joining Manchester City in 2014, the former Manchester City trainee has played for clubs in Spain, the Netherlands, and France, among others.

The new Crew winger has no experience playing in Manchester’s powder blue, but he does have international experience with Ghana’s national team.

He started one of three World Cup qualifiers in 2021, one of which he shared with now-fellow Black & Gold colleague Jonathan Mensah.

Yeboah was not included to the African Cup of Nations roster, which is set to begin on January 9. On January 10, Mensah and the Ghanaian National Team face Morocco in the group stage.

Yeboah has started 17 games for Krakow since the start of the 2021-22 Ekstraklasa season, scoring five goals and adding an assist.

Yeboah has 19 goals in 170 games in various professional leagues. After a season in which Columbus’ wingers scored just four goals in the regular season, the Crew is seeking for that scoring in a new signing.

Only Pedro Santos, a newly re-signed midfielder, scored many times in the role.

“We feel this addition to our squad will enhance our offense and help us increase production out wide,” Bezbachenko said of Yeboah’s inclusion to the Black and Gold winger corps.

In a battle for a slot beside Santos, Yeboah will face Luis Diaz, Derrick Etienne Jr., Kevin Molino, and Alexandru Matan. Even when healthy, the winger position has been the one area of the field where players have rotated the most over the past two seasons.

With this deal, Diaz, Etienne, Molino (once healed), and Matan will be under even more pressure to perform at a higher level. On January 16, the Black and Gold players will report to Columbus to begin the 2022 preseason.
